Abstract

This thesis examines the political system in the Buton Sultanate during the La Elangi period in the 17th century which is analyzed using Sufistic Islamism. The discourse on Sufistic Islamism is based on the terminology of Islamism which is generally understood as an extremist Islamic movement characterized by formalistic sharia. This triggers an attitude of exclusivity and intolerance to Islamophobia for those outside the Muslim religion. Then Sufistic Islamism refers to other Islamic disciplines such as Sufism by prioritizing an esoteric attitude toward human relations with God. With this, Sufistic Islamism leads to an Islamic political movement that makes Sufism a foundation. This research is historical research conducted with a sociological approach to find out La Elangi's background in determining the Islamic political movement and the actors who influenced him and a political approach to find out how Sufistic Islamism was implemented in the 17th century Buton Sultanate. This research found that in the 17th century, Buton officially made Sufism a political foundation in the form of a constitution and the preparation of a government system. This determination was based on the chaotic state of the country and the absence of rules that were officially used as guidelines for regulating the stability of society and government. Then the reason for the implementation of the Sufistic foundation is based on La Elangi's spiritual experience as a person who studies religion, especially Sufism. This research also offers a new discourse in seeing the phenomenon of Islamic political movements that are run by the principles of Sufistic Islam. Then, Sufistic Islamism is expected to be a negation of the term Islamism but with a mystical or Sufism foundation that emphasizes inner activities (essentiality in the worship process) so that Islam appears as an inclusive religion and leads to peace
