Abstract

This research aims to explore the concept of happiness from the perspective of Sufism initiated by al-Ghaza>li> and Hamka. Happiness is one of the themes that always attracts the attention of many parties because it concerns the nature of life and the way to achieve it. Happiness can be understood as an emotional condition that reflects feelings of pleasure, peace, and serenity, both outwardly and inwardly. Outward happiness relates to physical stability and comfort, while inner happiness involves tranquility, comfort, and deep peace of mind. The background of this research is the need to understand happiness from a Sufism perspective, which integrates spiritual, intellectual, and moral dimensions. The research problem formulations include: First, How do al-Ghaza>li> and Hamka define happiness, and what are the similarities and differences between them? Second, How is the relevance of the concept in the context of modern life? This research uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach. Data were collected through analyzing al-Ghaza>li>’s main works, such as Ki>miya>’ al-Sa‘a>dah, and Hamka’s writings, such as Tasawuf Modern. In addition, a critical review of supporting literature was also conducted to enrich the analysis. The data is analyzed descriptively-comparatively to explore the differences and similarities in the thoughts of the two figures. The importance of happiness stemming from harmonious relationships with God, oneself, and fellow human beings. Al-Ghaza>li> focuses more on happiness as a result of purification of the heart and closeness to God through Sufism. Meanwhile, Hamka added a strong social dimension, emphasizing the importance of happiness that involves moral responsibility towards society. The relevance of both concepts is significant in facing modern challenges, especially in providing spiritual and ethical guidance in the midst of an increasingly materialistic life. This research is expected to contribute to enriching the treasures of Islamic thought and become a reference for individuals and society in understanding and achieving true happiness.
