Abstract

The phenomenon of dress in the contemporary era has a very significant development. So that there are many kinds of clothing that seem to defy the boundaries of rigid gender stereotypes such as unisex clothing and andorgini. In this case, the hadith as a guideline provides a limitation space for this phenomenon. It is mentioned in the narration that the Prophet cursed men who dress like women and vice versa. This narrative is then interpreted textually by a group of scholars who are of the view that the phenomenon of dressing in this contemporary era is a mistake and should be avoided. Of course, this view has a bit much debate so it is interesting to study, because of course it is irrelevant if it only relies on textual views to deal with the trend of globalization issues, especially in terms of dressing in the contemporary era. In this regard, the author feels the need to conduct a study to understand how the hadith can be relevant and used today in a thesis research entitled “Contextualization of Hadith on the Prohibition of Dressing to Resemble the Opposite Sex: Fazlur Rahman's Perspective”. This research examines the contextualization of the Hadith on the prohibition of dressing like the opposite sex in relation to the concept of dress in the contemporary era, using the perspective of Fazlur Rahman's double movement theory. The main focus of this research is to understand the relevance of the hadith in the context of today's social life, where the concept of dressing has evolved to become more flexible, with the trend of unisex and androgynous clothing spreading among the public. This study aims to analyze how the hadith about the prohibition of dressing like the opposite sex is applied in the modern social context that demands freedom of self-expression in appearance, and how Rahman's double movement theory can provide a new understanding of the moral values contained in the hadith. The first movement in this study discusses the historical and moral meaning of the hadith. Historically, in pre-Islamic times the concept of dressing was functional. However, after Islam came there began to be a shift in the concept of dressing in society at that time from functional to functionalism forged by ideology. So the moral ideals that can be found in the first movement are; 1) Maintain a clear gender identity, 2) Avoiding misleading gender ambiguity, 3) Avoiding behavior that can damage personal and collective dignity. While the second movement relates it to the phenomenon of contemporary clothing that often blurs the boundaries of gender identity. This research concludes that the concept of unisex and androgynous clothing in modern trends should not be seen as a threat to Islamic values. Instead, these trends can be a form of cultural adaptation that remains in line with Islamic teachings if used with the right intentions. Islam has never prescribed a particular form of clothing that is mandatory, except for the limits of aurat and modesty. Therefore, modern trends such as unisex and androgynous clothing can be considered as cultural developments as long as they do not violate the basic principles of religion.
