Abstract

Zirconia (ZrO2) is a transition metal that in the form of nanoparticles is widely used in industry, nuclear, and medicine. This study aims to obtain a formulation of nanozirconia synthesis from zirconyl chloride through a precipitation method with high-quality characteristics. Nanozirconia (ZrO2) was synthesized with zirconyl chloride (ZrOCl2) precursor through a precipitation method. The synthesis of nanozirconia was carried out in three stages. Preparation was carried out by dissolving zirconyl chloride and NaOH using distilled water with a mass ratio of ZrOCl2/volume of distilled water (S/L) of 2:6. Furthermore, precipitation, NaOH solution was added to a 1 M ZrOCl2 solution with a concentration varying from 0.5-2.5 M and at a precipitation pH condition varying from 8-12, heating at 90oC, speed at 700 rpm, and stirring time varying from 30-90 minutes. The precipitation stage was continued without stirring and heating for ± 24 hours, followed by filtration and washing using distilled water. Furthermore, it was dried at a temperature of 110oC for 3 hours and calcined at a temperature of 900oC with a time varying from 1-3 hours. Nanozirconia was characterized using XRF, XRD, FTIR, and SEM tests. Optimal precipitation at pH 10 with a concentration of 1 M NaOH and stirring for 60 minutes. The optimal calcination time was 3 hours on the CRM sample with the results of the XRD test obtained a monoclinic crystal structure, a degree of crystallinity of 88,2%, and a crystallinity index of 99,72%. Meanwhile, the crystal size was obtained 49,06 nm with a position of 2θ (o) at 28,246o and the particle size of the SEM test results ranged from 54-60 nm. The FTIR test results obtained peaks at 504,86 cm-1 and 768,99 cm-1 with Zr and ZrO2 concentrations from the XRF test results of 89,567% and 87,57% respectively.
