Abstract
Na2O/Activated Carbon and Na2O/Zeolite catalysts in this study were used as catalysts for transesterification of cooking oil into methyl ester. The purpose of this study was to determine the yield and type of methyl ester produced based on % yield, flame test, and GC-MS analysis. Catalyst characterization using XRD produced diffraction peaks at angles 2θ: 27.86o; 28.44o; 33.36o; 35.04o; 37.91o and 54.03o. The synthesis data of both catalysts are in accordance with JCPDS number 03-1074 which indicates the presence of Na2O. The intensity of the Na2O/Activated Carbon catalyst is higher than Na2O/Zeolite. Methyl ester was synthesized through transesterification at a temperature of 60°C for 2 hours. The methyl ester results were characterized using GC-MS which showed oleate methyl ester and palmitate methyl ester as the dominant components in both catalysts. Laurate methyl ester, undecanoate methyl ester and arachidonic methyl ester components were only found in the Na2O/Activated Carbon catalyst. Methyl ester with Na2O/Activated Carbon catalyst produced better yields compared to the Na2O/Zeolite catalyst, which were 70.42% and 64.55%, respectively. The advantage of Na2O/Activated Carbon lies in the greater amount of Na2O bound to the pores of the activated carbon based on XRD data. Testing the flash point of methyl ester with Na2O/Activated Carbon catalyst and Na2O/Zeolite catalyst produced temperatures of 145 oC and 148 oC, respectively.
