Abstract

The photo series “This Is Us (?)” by Riska Munawarah explores the identity of Acehnese Muslim women under the implementation of Sharia Qanun. This study aims to analyze the representation of Acehnese women’s identity using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach and Stuart Hall’s theory of representation. Barthes’ semiotics is employed to examine the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings in visual signs, while Hall’s representation theory explores how the visual language in the photographs constructs, exchanges, and shapes meaning through cultural and social processes. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with semiotic and representation analysis techniques. The data were analyzed by identifying visual elements in the photographs, such as symbols, expressions, compositions, and the cultural context underlying the creation of the images. This study also considers the narrative embedded in the photographs and how the visual messages in the images can be interpreted through the cultural, social, and religious constructs present in Acehnese society. The findings reveal that the photographs in this series represent the identity of Acehnese women as confined, restricted, and limited by a societal structure rooted in patriarchy and reinforced by religious legitimacy in the form of Sharia Qanun. At the levels of connotation, myth, and representation, the symbols in the photographs reflect the activism of Acehnese women against the Qanun that restricts them. The prevailing ideology and societal constructs in Aceh position women’s identities as subordinate to men, while the Sharia Qanun is constructed as a tool to legitimize control over women. This study concludes that the identity of Acehnese women is a product of dynamic negotiations between religious, socio-cultural, and political discourses
