Abstract

This thesis examines the concept of metaphysics in the thought of Sayyid Muhammad Husayn al-Tabataba’i, with a primary focus on his work ‘Ali wa al-Falsafah al-Ilahiyah. In this work, al-Tabataba’i juxtaposes ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib with metaphysics. This approach is intriguing as it differs from previous Muslim philosophers and highlights the uniqueness of his thought. This raises questions about al-Tabataba’i's concept of metaphysics and how ‘Ali becomes an integral part of his philosophy. To date, studies on al-Tabataba’i's thought have primarily focused on the issues of al-wujūd (existence) and his exegesis. This research aims to uncover the reasons why al-Tabataba’i aligns the figure of ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib with metaphysical studies. It employs library research with a qualitative method. The nature of this study is descriptive-analytical to draw conclusions from al-Tabataba’i's thought. The approach used is philosophical, interpreting data from primary and secondary sources. ‘Ali wa al-Falsafah al-Ilahiyah serves as the main primary source, along with other works by al-Tabataba’i. Secondary sources include various books and articles relevant to the thesis theme. The results reveal that al-Falsafah al-Ilahiyah in al-Tabataba’i’s thought encompasses metaphysics as ultimate reality, modes of ontological existence, and a worldview. This study emphasizes a hierarchical and circular interpretation of metaphysical philosophy, positioning humans as entities continually progressing towards perfection. Al-Tabataba’i views the perfect human as muta’allih, an entity that continuously advances towards perfection by connecting with Being. In this context, ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib is considered the perfect representation of muta’allih. His words serve as a guide for others to achieve the highest metaphysical awareness.
