Abstract

This research is motivated by the observations, it was found that 60% of kindergarten A children could only count 1-10 but did not understand the shape of the numbers, the ability to recognize number symbolism in children was still not optimally achieved, and the playground media in the kindergarten was still incomplete. From the results of the above problems, the researcher wants to design media that can improve the symbolic thinking ability of early childhood. This development research aims to: (1) Knowing the feasibility of developing magic box media to improve symbolic thinking skills in children aged 4-5 years, (2) Knowing the practicality of using magic box media to improve the symbolic thinking skills of children aged 4-5 years, (3) Knowing the effectiveness of using magic box media in stimulating the symbolic thinking skills of children aged 4-5 years. This study uses the Research and Development development research method, the research location is TKIT Salsabila Al Muthi’in, this research design uses the ADDIE model which consists of five stages, namely analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation, this research data collection instrument is expert research data, observation, interviews, questionnaires, data analysis techniques, this research is the main field tester with normality test, Wilcoxon test, hypothesis test, t-test (one-group pretest-posttest). This research resulted in: (1) The level of feasibility of magic box media to improve the symbolic thinking ability of children aged 4-5 years, the media developed is considered very valid and feasible to use because the product developed is in accordance with the needs analysis as one of the learning resources in the development of symbolic thinking based on the assessment of media experts, material experts, expert practitioners or teachers, and test subjects. (2) The level of practicality is seen from the assessment of the quality of the media provided by the teacher based on the quality of the media in terms of physical and material. The acquisition of these values states that the media developed in the form of magic boxes get the category “very feasible”. So it can also be stated that the magic box media is practical to use as a learning media, (3) The level of effectiveness of media development is seen from the results of hypothesis test calculations, normality tests, and Wilcoxon tests obtained from the comparison of the average pretest and posttest scores. The implications of the development of magic box media to improve the symbolic thinking ability of children aged 4-5 years are in the valid, effective, and practical categories.
