Abstract

Cyberbullying has become an increasing phenomenon along with the rapid development of social media. Without realizing it, the low level of media literacy in society has caused many individuals to become victims or perpetrators. The movie Budi Pekerti depicts how the main character faces cyberbullying and tries to fight it through media literacy skills. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how media literacy can be used as a strategic effort to fight cyberbullying, just like the main character in Budi Pekerti movie. With a qualitative approach using the content analysis method, this research explores various forms of cyberbullying faced by the main character based on Williard's concept, such as flaming, harassment, denigration, cyberstalking, impersonation, trickery, outing, and exclusion. In addition, this study also identifies media literacy efforts made by the main character based on Jenkins' concept, which includes play, simulation, performance, appropriation, multitasking, distributed cognition, collective intelligence, judgment, transmedia navigation, networking, and negotiation. The results show that the ethical film comprehensively illustrates how the main character uses media literacy as an effort to fight cyberbullying. The various media literacy efforts applied not only help the main character in dealing with difficult situations, but also provide insights for the community in dealing with similar phenomena. Overall, this study confirms that media literacy can be an effective solution in fighting cyberbullying and building awareness of the impact of using social media wisely. The implications of this research are expected to increase people's understanding of the importance of media literacy in facing digital challenges.
