Abstract

Kasongan Pottery Craft is one of the local superior products that has high cultural and economic value. Kasongan Pottery Craft is famous for its uniqueness, namely the sticking technique in its production process which is also influenced by geographical factors and reputation that has been maintained since the Dutch colonial era. To protect its identity, quality and reputation, Kasongan Pottery Craft is given a Geographical Indication Certificate as a legal instrument aimed at protecting production rights and increasing added value to Kasongan Pottery Craft. This study uses a field research method with a descriptive analytical approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with several craftsmen, the Chairperson of the Geographical Indication Protection Society (MPIG) Kasongan and the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Special Region of Yogyakarta and document studies including Geographical Indication Certificates and related regulations. Data analysis was conducted qualitatively to analyze the effectiveness of the Geographical Indication Certificate in protecting production rights and its impact on increasing added value in Kasongan Pottery Crafts. The results of the study indicate that the Geographical Indication Certificate is effective in protecting the production rights of Kasongan Pottery Crafts, especially in the misuse of the name "Kasongan" on its products and providing legal certainty in preventing or if there is a violation of Kasongan Pottery Crafts. However, the impact of the Geographical Indication Certificate on increasing added value has not been fully felt by Kasongan Pottery Crafts artisans. This is because this certificate has only been given in a relatively short period of time and the lack of understanding of artisans regarding the benefits of the Geographical Indication Certificate, lack of promotion and limited market access.
