Abstract
Menthol is an organic compound with various applications on an industrial scale, especially in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries. However, the current menthol production process is quite expensive, so a more economical and efficient alternative is needed. Citronellal, one of the dominant compounds in citronella oil, has great potential as a raw material for menthol through cyclization and hydrogenation methods. This study aims to analyze the reaction products of the one pot system synthesis of citronellal into menthol, by optimizing the variation of the mass ratio of acid-activated Ni/Bentonite catalysts and variations in the volume of isopropanol solvents. In this study, the Ni-Bentonite catalyst was made from natural bentonite through ion exchange to form Na-Bentonite, followed by impregnation of Ni metal (10%) using a natural precursor, namely dragon fruit peel extract as a reducing agent. Dragon fruit peel was chosen because it contains active compounds such as flavonoids and polyphenols which function as environmentally friendly natural reductants. The resulting catalyst was then characterized using FTIR and XRD tests to ensure the presence and structure of its active compounds. One pot system synthesis was carried out with variations in catalyst mass (1 g; 1.5 g; and 2 g) and variations in isopropanol solvent volume (60 mL, 90 mL, and 120 mL). The reaction products were analyzed using FTIR and GC-MS to identify the presence and percentage of menthol formed. The results showed that menthol compounds were formed with the highest percentage of 42.93% under the best conditions, namely with a reaction ratio of 1:9 (10 mL of citronellal, 1 g of Ni-Bentonite catalyst, and 90 mL of isopropanol).
