Abstract

The bhen ghiben tradition is a form of dowry brought during the marriage contract ceremony, consisting of items such as furniture, kitchenware, and vehicles. The practice of bhen ghiben is similar to the mahr (dowry), as both are mandatory. The mahr, according to Islamic teachings, is a duty that must be fulfilled by the groom, while bhen ghiben is an obligation demanded by the local customs of the community. The people of Desa Sera Barat view the bhen ghiben tradition as something that must be carried out, even though they face various challenges, such as family conflicts caused by the high demands of bhen ghiben and the differences in the standards applied. This research aims to explore why the community in Desa Sera Barat, Bluto District, Sumenep Regency, continues to preserve the bhen ghiben tradition and to analyze the social impacts of the demands of bhen ghiben on the local community. This study uses field research with an empirical sociological approach. Using this approach, the researcher observes the bhen ghiben practices carried out by the people of Desa Sera Barat, Bluto District, Sumenep Regency, and then examines the reasons and impacts of the demands for carrying out this tradition. Data collection techniques were conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation. Interviews were held with various parties, including the village head and the bride and groom. Observations were made during the implementation of the bhen ghiben practice at the traditional wedding ceremony in Desa Sera Barat, Bluto District, Sumenep Regency. The data obtained from interviews and observations, supplemented with documentation, were then analyzed using Social Action Theory and the concept of Maslahah. The research shows that, first, the bhen ghiben tradition in Sera Barat, Bluto District, Sumenep Regency, is still preserved because it holds significant cultural and social meaning. Culturally, this tradition serves as a symbol of family pride and respect for customs. Socially, bhen ghiben demonstrates the commitment of the groom to the marriage and family, as well as maintaining social reputation. The implementation of this tradition is influenced by three factors: rational and affective actions to maintain family reputation and symbolize pride, and traditional social actions as part of cultural identity. Second, The demands of the bhen ghiben tradition can impact social and economic balance. However, by applying the principle of maslahah and choosing the lesser harm, this tradition can be preserved without compromising well-being. Bhen ghiben that is adjusted to the family's capability falls under the category of maslahah taḥsīniyyāt, which aims to enhance social relationships and maintain ethics without increasing economic burdens
