Abstract
Film is a popular mass communication medium widely appreciated by the public, with a unique way of conveying messages through storytelling. One such film that delivers a strong message to its audience is YUNI, directed by Kamila Andini. From the perspective of communication sociology, this film illustrates how communication plays a role in shaping, reinforcing, or challenging social norms. Through various forms of symbolic interaction, gender communication, and media as a message delivery tool, the film portrays the challenges women face in securing their rights. Overall, YUNI provides a powerful depiction of how gender inequality remains deeply embedded in societal culture. The subordination, stereotypes, and violence against women persist due to patriarchal social norms that restrict women's freedom to make decisions about their own lives. This film highlights the importance of awareness and resistance against unjust norms, as well as the need for support to ensure women have equal rights in various aspects of life, including education, self-expression, and protection from violence This study aims to understand how the reality of women is constructed by society and to explore various forms of gender injustice against women as depicted in YUNI. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis approach, involving stages of denotative meaning, connotative meaning, and myth interpretation. Data collection techniques include identifying key scenes based on gender concepts and utilizing the theory of social reality construction by Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann. The study identifies nine key scenes that illustrate the social construction of women, ranging from the scene in which virginity tests are mandated for female students to the conversation between Bu Lilies and the school principal, where he argues that female students should not be encouraged to pursue higher education. These findings reveal that YUNI presents various forms of gender inequality experienced by women, particularly in three main aspects: subordination, gender stereotypes, and gender-based violence. The subordination of women is evident in the division of social roles that confine them to the domestic sphere, while men have greater access to power and opportunities. This is further reinforced by gender stereotypes that categorize roles and characteristics based on sex. These stereotypes not only shape societal perceptions of women but also influence the education system and workforce, where women are often perceived as less competent than men. Additionally, women are highly vulnerable to various forms of violence, both in domestic and public settings. Violence such as harassment, discrimination, and policies that disadvantage women, including control over their bodies, remains prevalent. This highlights that gender inequality is not just about unequal opportunities but also a human rights issue that continues to be overlooked. Ultimately, gender inequality remains a complex issue that permeates various aspects of society. It not only restricts women's freedom of expression but also hinders their opportunities for growth in education, employment, and social life. This injustice stems from deeply rooted patriarchal norms and cultures that have shaped societal structures for centuries, positioning women in a subordinate role compared to men.
