Abstract

The environment of higher education in Indonesia is enhanced by the existence of student Pesantrens run by private universities. The importance of student Pesantrens is seen in their capacity to generate graduates with strong moral character in addition to great academic proficiency. As Muslim intellectuals, alumni of student Pesantrens are supposed to serve as agents of change who uphold both religious and academic ideals. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research examining the patterns of character education in student Pesantrens. A gap persists between the theoretical frameworks of character education and their practical implementation, particularly in adapting educational approaches to limited resources and human capital. In the current context, student Pesantrens face various challenges, including shifts in youth lifestyles, rapid advancements in information technology, and the increasingly competitive demands of the job market. Additionally, global issues such as weak national leadership, high levels of corruption, and identity crises exacerbate the situation. Conversely, the societal demand for graduates with strong character continues to rise, especially in anticipation of the 2045 "Golden Generation." Thus, strengthening character education models in student Pesantrens is crucial for enriching the nation's character capital. This is a qualitative research with an ethnographic approach, analyzed using Spradley's data analysis model. Data were collected through observations, documentation, and interviews with caretakers, administrators, students (santri), and alumni from four student Pesantrens affiliated with private universities in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Informants were selected using a purposive sampling technique. The results show that each student Pesantren has distinctive character education models, which are represented in the steps taken to help student residents build their character. The various fields in which the graduates work demonstrate the results of these character education initiatives. Furthermore, this study offers insights into formulating character education patterns in student Pesantrens. These patterns include: (1) character education based on the vision, mission, and goals of the Pesantren; (2) character education based on the typology of the Pesantren; (3) character education tailored to the Pesantren’s human resources; (4) character education adjusted for the number of students and their duration of study; (5) character education guided by the Pesantren’s regulations; (6) character education through habituation methods; and (7) character education employing a multifaceted approach.
