Abstract

Physics is considered one of the most challenging subjects for students, especially in the kinetic theory of gases. Many students experience misconceptions in understanding this concept, making it necessary to develop an appropriate evaluation tool to detect them. This study aims to: (1) develop a four-tier diagnostic test instrument to identify misconceptions in the kinetic theory of gases, (2) determine the quality of the four-tier diagnostic test instrument in detecting misconceptions, and (3) analyze students' misconceptions regarding the kinetic theory of gases using the four-tier diagnostic test. This research employs the Research and Development (R&D) method using the Wilson, Oriondo, and Antonio development model, which consists of three main stages: (1) design, (2) test trial, and (3) test measurement. The research instrument was validated through expert material review and empirical testing before being trialed. The test trial aimed to ensure that the developed instrument possessed good validity and reliability and was capable of identifying students' misconceptions. The results indicate that the developed four-tier diagnostic test has good quality in assessing students' understanding. The reliability test results show an item reliability score of 0.94, a person reliability score of 0.57, and a Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.56. Furthermore, the analysis revealed that the highest misconceptions among students were found in Avogadro’s Law and Charles’s Law
