Abstract

This study examines politics and power in the Alabasta Arc of the One Piece anime through the lens of Ibn Khaldun’s political philosophy, focusing on the concepts of asabiyyah (social solidarity) and al-‘umran (civilization). Anime, as a popular medium, not only serves as entertainment but also reflects real-world social and political dynamics. The Alabasta Arc illustrates how power can be manipulated through propaganda and political strategies by Crocodile, who seeks to take control of the Alabasta kingdom by creating internal conflict and undermining the people's trust in their ruler. This phenomenon is relevant to Ibn Khaldun’s theory, which emphasizes the importance of social solidarity in maintaining the stability of a civilization and preventing its downfall due to corrupt governance. This study employs a qualitative approach using narrative analysis and hermeneutic methods to interpret the representation of political philosophy concepts within the anime’s storyline. Primary data is sourced from the narrative of One Piece, particularly the Alabasta Arc, while secondary data is derived from academic literature discussing Ibn Khaldun’s philosophy and studies on politics in popular media. The research focuses on analyzing conflicts, propaganda, and the efforts of main characters to reconstruct social trust amidst political chaos. The findings reveal that asabiyyah is reflected in Vivi and her allies’ struggle to restore the people’s trust in Alabasta, while al-‘umran is evident in the cycle of destruction and recovery of civilization caused by political manipulation. This study asserts that anime can be an effective medium for analyzing political philosophy concepts and provides new perspectives in political and media studies. Thus, this research contributes to the understanding of how narratives in popular culture can represent classical political theories in a way that remains relevant to contemporary contexts.
