Abstract
The study of Qur’anic interpretation continues to develop in response to changing times and the growing need for Muslims to gain a deeper understanding of its meaning. One of the chapters with significant historical and conceptual importance is Surah Al-‘Alaq, the first revelation received by Prophet Muhammad This chapter highlights the fundamental.- role of knowledge and education in human life. Differences in the interpretation of this chapter can be observed in Tafsir Al-Azhar by Hamka and Tafsir Al-Mishbah by Quraish Shihab. Therefore, this study aims to analyze and compare the methods and approaches used by these two scholars in interpreting Surah Al-‘Alaq. This research employs a qualitative methodology with a descriptive-analytical and comparative approach. Data were collected through a literature review by analyzing various tafsir books and other relevant sources. The analysis focused on identifying the interpretative patterns applied by each scholar, highlighting both the differences and similarities in their understanding of Surah Al-‘Alaq. The findings reveal that Tafsir Al-Azhar predominantly adopts a contextual approach, linking the verses of Surah Al-‘Alaq to social, moral, and educational aspects of society. In contrast, Tafsir Al-Mishbah emphasizes a linguistic and hermeneutic approach, providing in-depth linguistic analysis and its relevance to the development of modern knowledge. While both tafsir emphasize the importance of knowledge and education, differences in their interpretative methods and approaches contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the Qur’an. Therefore, this study is expected to enrich the field of Qur’anic studies, particularly in exploring verses related to knowledge and education.
