Abstract
This research examines the nature of prostration in the Sumarah teachings and Sufi dhikr from the perspective of Robert Redfield's syncretism. Paguyuban Sumarah is one of the belief systems in Indonesia, founded by Soekino Hartono on September 8, 1935, in Yogyakarta. The community has a unique spiritual approach, especially in the practice of prostration as a symbol of total submission to God. This research aims to uncover the essence of prostration in the Sumarah tradition, as well as to examine how this concept is similar to dhikr in the Islamic Sufism tradition. This research uses a qualitative field approach, with data obtained through in-depth interviews with competent Sumarah practitioners in their field. Data processing was carried out using the stages of data reduction, data presentation, comparison, and conclusion drawing. Next, the data is analyzed using Robert Redfield's concept of syncretism. This research found that Sumarah prostration and Sufi dhikr have essential similarities resulting from syncretism, thus forming Sumarah Sufism. Sumarah as a Little Tradition shows a strong influence of Islamic Sufism (Great Tradition) in the concepts of dhikr, spiritual goals, and methods of practice, although there are differences in structure and learning systems. This syncretism is evident in the adaptation of Sufi teachings to Javanese culture, such as the application of the concept of wahdatul wujud in the Javanese context. In addition to the mystical aspect, Sumarah also emphasizes moral transformation through dhikr, in line with the concept of takhalluq bi akhlaqillah, and self-purification similar to tazkiyatun nafs. Thus, Sumarah is a spiritual adaptation of Islamic Sufism within the context of Javanese culture, which integrates dhikr and self-purification with the distinctive approach of Javanese mysticism.
