Abstract

The cover of the Tempo Magazine edition of “Timang-Timang Dinastiku Sayang” discussed the dynastic politics built by President Joko Widodo in the 2024 presidential and vice precidential candidate election contests. This study aims to find out the representation of dynastic politics in the cover of the Tempo magazine edition “Timang-Timang Dinastiku Sayang” with the approach of Charles Sanders Pierce’s semiotic analysis and Stuart Hall's theory of representation. In semiotics Charles Sanders Pierce is classified with Pierce's triadic triangle, namely: object consisting of icons, indexes, and symbols; representatives in the form of qualisign, sinsign, legisign; and interpretation consisting of rheme, dicisign, and argument to determine the meaning of the sign to be represented using Stuart Hall's theory of representation which views meaning from the point of view of language. The results of this study conclude that the objects depicted in the cover are figures involved in dynastic politics in the 2024 presidential election contest, namely President Jokowi, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and Prabowo Subianto who show representation in the form of President Jokowi's totality efforts in supporting his son in the 2024 presidential election to perpetuate his power even though it violates ethical norms. Tempo interprets dynastic political news with the conditions of reality depicted through the re-creation of scenes in the 1994 film The Lion King. The existence of this research can be an insight into the study of visual communication on magazine covers and mass media as public supervisor who are tasked with monitoring if there is an abuse of power in the government especially in the context of dynastic politics.
