Abstract

Despite the expected emotional readiness and problem-solving abilities, some students experience academic stress due to academic pressure and uncertainty about their future. This study aims to investigate the relationship between hardiness, social support from thesis advisors, and academic stress among undergraduate students working on their theses. A sample of 120 undergraduate students from UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta was selected using quota sampling. Data were collected through online questionnaires and analyzed using multiple linear regression. Hypothesis testing revealed that hardiness and social support from thesis advisors did not significantly correlate with academic stress (p=0.118) with a contribution effect of 3.58%. Additionally, hardiness was also found to be non-significant correlated with academic stress (p=0.136) with a contribution effect of 3.48%.. Furthermore, the results showed that social support from thesis advisors did not significantly correlate with academic stress (p=0.724) with a contribution effect of 1.73%. Interestingly, the results of demographic factor analysis found that organizational involvement was positively correlated with academic stress (p=0.041). The findings of this study differ from previous research, indicating that social support from thesis advisors has a negligible effect on reducing academic stress among undergraduate students. This study implies that social support is not solely derived from thesis advisors, but can be obtained from other sources.
