Abstract
This study examines the motivations and subjective well-being of traffic controllers in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta. The purpose of this study is to understand the motivations for working as traffic controllers and how this work affects their subjective well-being. This research used a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving five traffic controllers working at several strategic locations in Sleman Regency. Data analysis was conducted using data reduction, data presentation, and interactive conclusion drawing techniques. The results showed that the motivation of traffic controllers consists of two main aspects: (1) Intrinsic motivations include enjoying helping others and working based on personal values. (2) Extrinsic motivations include difficulty in finding a job and the need to fulfill financial needs. The subjective well-being of traffic controllers consists of: (1) The meaning of life derived from their role in helping road users and practicing personal values. (2) Social relationships established through interactions with fellow traffic controllers, family, and community. (3) Adaptability to deal with uncertain working conditions. (4) Stress management strategies such as trying to calm down. These motivations are closely related to the subjective well-being of traffic controllers. (1) Traffic controllers who have intrinsic motivation to work based on personal values tend to be more able to find meaning in their work. This contributes to the meaning of life aspect of subjective well-being. (2) Traffic controllers who have intrinsic motivation in the form of a feeling of having a social role tend to build positive social relationships with fellow traffic controllers, road users, and the surrounding community. (3) Those who work due to extrinsic motivation in the form of limited formal employment opportunities often experience challenges in adaptability, especially due to unstable working conditions and uncertain income. (4) Traffic controllers who are driven by extrinsic motivation in the form of economic demands often face stress due to income uncertainty and social stigma towards their work.
