Abstract

The synthesis of menthol from citronellal of lemongrass oil isolate has been carried out using a one-pot system method in order to improve the efficiency of the process. This study aims to investigate the effect of amount of citronellal (20 mL and 30 mL) and reaction time (5 hours and 6 hours) on menthol yield. Reaction was conducted in a reflux system at 80°C with isopropanol solvent and acid activated Ni/bentonite catalyst and reduced with dragonfruit peel extract. The product was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The presence of menthol was confirmed. The results showed that menthol yield increased with increasing reaction time, with an optimum yield of 21.94% at 20 mL citronellal and 6 hours reaction time. However, increasing the amount of citronellal to 30 mL did not result in a significant increase in yield. With further optimization, this method could potentially be used more efficiently in the synthesis of menthol
