Abstract

The closure of the Piyungan Final Processing Site (TPA) has caused various problems, one of which is the loss of the main source of income for people who depend on activities at the TPA for their livelihoods. The majority of these people are scavengers who are members of the Mardiko community. As an organizing institution, the Mardiko Community plays an important role in guiding its members to survive amidst these challenges. The lack of access to waste sources encourages the community to develop new strategies in responding to this situation. Therefore, this study aims to explore the adaptation strategies used by informal workers in the Mardiko Community to maintain their livelihoods after the closure of the Piyungan TPA. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method using data collection techniques in the form of interviews, observations, and documentation. The analysis is based on the Adaptation Theory proposed by John William Bennett. The results of the study indicate that the socio-economic conditions of the Mardiko Community have changed after the closure, including shifts in community interactions, decreased income, and limited employment opportunities. The adaptation strategies carried out by informal workers in the Mardiko Community can be divided into three types, namely: (1) behavioral adaptation strategies, such as financial management, borrowing money from relatives, and relying on help from children; (2) tactical adaptation strategies, namely holding group meetings; and (3) process adaptation strategies, namely establishing a legally valid cooperative.
