Abstract

This research discusses the dynamics of the religious life of the Muslim Orang Laut (Sea Nomads) on Bertam Island, Belakang Padang District, Batam City, Riau Islands from 1988 to 2022 M. The Orang Laut are indigenous Malay people. This ethnic group lives nomadically, moving from one island's waters to another in the Riau Islands region. They are called Orang Laut or Sea Nomads because they conduct all their activities at sea on a boat or a raft with a thatched roof. However, with the passage of time and the implementation of government development programs, the Orang Laut community has experienced various changes and developments in their way of life. This has affected the social and religious well-being of the Muslim Orang Laut community on Bertam Island and has led to changes in their religious life. Efforts to disseminate religion to specific ethnic groups, particularly those referred to as indigenous people, often result in religious conversion among some or even all members of the tribe. Consequently, there are dynamics in religious dissemination, ranging from the methods of religious propagation, the motives influencing indigenous people to convert religions, to the impact on their religiosity. The purpose of this research is to examine the religious life of Muslim Orang Laut on the mainland of Bertam Island. This study adopts a religious anthropology approach by positioning Muslim Orang Laut as subjects in an ongoing historical research. The theoretical framework utilized is Clifford Geertz's theory of religious anthropology. The historical methods employed include heuristic, verification, interpretation, and historiography.
