Abstract

The use of languages in literary works sometimes uses various forms of deviation with the aims of accentuating the aesthetic function. Thus, this deviation in language use makes it difficult for readers to understand the language used by the author and result in errors or deviations in the meanings that the author wants to convey. One of the literary works is a novel by Khaled Hosseini entitled The Kite Runner, which also emphasizes the aesthetic function. This study has a title The Surface and Deep Structure Analysis of the Selected Dialog of the Characters in the Novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini aims to analyze the characters’ dialogues in The Kite Runner. The dialogues are analyzed using the theory of situational context by describing 5 aspects of situational context to find the surface structure in the dialogues that has different meaning, then conclude the deep structure of the dialogue. There are seventy-nine different dialogues between the surface structure and the deep structure and it is concluded that from the surface structure found, there are one hundred fifty-eight deep structure. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that the context situation helps to find the dialogue with surface structure that has more meaning than the literal words that are spoken, so it bring out the deep structure that shows the actual speech and meaning that the characters want to convey, making it easier for readers of The Kite Runner novel to gain a deeper understanding.
