Abstract
Ghassan Kanafani, a renowned Palestinian writer of the 20th century, is known for his work that focuses on the experiences of Palestinians in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In his works, Kanafani explores themes such as Palestinian identity, struggle, and feelings of loss due to expulsion from their homeland. Through powerful and imaginative narratives, she introduces readers to the reality of Palestinian life under Israeli occupation, and voices their aspirations and hopes for freedom and justice. Kanafani's works present a unique, thought-provoking perspective on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and champion global awareness of the situation in Palestine. From this fact, one of Ghassan Kanafani's works entitled Al-Qamῑṣ Al-Masrūq tells the story of the social facts of Palestinian society. This research uses Goldmann's dialectical descriptive approach to investigate the relationship between the structure of a literary work, social reality, social context, author's perspective, and factors that influence the creation of a literary work. This analysis draws on the theory of genetic structuralism introduced by Lucien Goldmann. It includes concepts such as the fact of humanity, the collective subject, structuration, the author's worldview, and the understanding and explanation contained in the text. The short story "Al-Qamῑs Al-Masrūq" by Ghassan Kanafani presents three deep social criticisms. First, Kanafani criticizes the economic injustice experienced by the Palestinian people due to the conflict with Israel, depicting despair and economic hardship through his characters. Second, through strong symbolism and narrative, Kanafani highlights the political uncertainty, structural injustice, and rampant corruption in Palestine. Thirdly, Kanafani expresses a critique of power spread throughout the social structure, reflected in human interactions and the dynamics between social groups, by utilizing a strong language style to convey critical messages about social injustice and the pressures of power. Through characters such as Abū al-'Abd and Abū Samῑr, Kanafani reflects the internal and external conflicts affecting individuals in Palestinian society in 1958, enriching the reader's understanding of the relevant social and historical context.
