Abstract
The growing phenomenon of single-parent families in Grobogan Regency reflects a significant transformation in family structures, which in turn impacts parenting patterns, emotional well-being, and child development, particularly during adolescence, a critical stage in an individual’s growth. This structural shift is tangibly experienced by students at SMA Negeri 1 Godong who come from single-parent households. In this context, interpersonal communication between parents (or caregivers) and adolescents emerges as a key factor in supporting cognitive development, including thinking abilities and adaptability in facing life’s challenges. This study aims to explore how interpersonal communication between adolescents and their single parents contributes to adolescents’ cognitive development. Employing a descriptive qualitative method and a field study approach, the research involved adolescents aged 15–18 years from single-parent families. Data were collected through observation, documentation, in-depth interviews and analyzed using DeVito’s five dimensions of interpersonal communication: openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, and equality. The findings reveal that adolescents’ cognitive development, such as critical thinking, decision-making, and constructive conflict resolution, can be enhanced through communication characterized by openness, empathy, and equality. Moreover, even in cases where adolescents receive limited emotional support from their single parent, they are still capable of developing adaptive strategies, including seeking alternative sources of support and cultivating strong self-motivation. These strategies are driven by a sense of positiveness, an optimistic outlook that empowers adolescents to navigate challenges and pursue personal growth.
