Abstract
This study examines the role of elderly volunteerism and Ahlul Khidmah in elderly social services at the Al-Jenderami Foundation, Selangor, Malaysia. The research is grounded in the growing elderly population in Malaysia, which poses various social challenges, particularly in terms of care and well-being. The Al-Jenderami Foundation, a faith-based community institution, initiated a volunteerism movement involving elderly individuals and Ahlul Khidmah to support social services through both spiritual and operational efforts. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method, collecting data through in-depth interviews with seven key informants. The theoretical framework is based on Mintzberg’s role theory, which encompasses three categories: interpersonal roles, informational roles, and decisional roles. The findings reveal that elderly individuals serve as moral leaders, spiritual advisors, and community mobilizers, while Ahlul Khidmah act as technical implementers, daily companions, and intergenerational value connectors. The results highlight that this form of volunteerism significantly enhances the emotional and spiritual well-being of the elderly and fosters strong intergenerational social solidarity rooted in religious and humanitarian values. The study recommends the development of community-based social service models inspired by the Al-Jenderami Foundation to be adopted in Indonesia and other countries
