Abstract
Porosity is the empty space in rocks that functions as a storage place for hydrocarbons, such as oil and gas, making it a key parameter in determining the potential of a rock as a reservoir. One type of reservoir rock that is often encountered for porosity analysis is Berea sandstone. This study employs neutron computed tomography (NCT) to measure and analyze porosity in rocks, with the advantage of this technique being its ability to provide 3D visualization of porosity distribution within rocks without damaging the sample (non-destructive). The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of applying the neutron computed tomography (NCT) technique with a spatial resolution of 200 μm in measuring porosity in Berea sandstone. The image reconstruction stage was performed using Octopus Reconstruction 8.9 software, which produced a set of 2D images in the form of cross-sections of Berea sandstone samples in gray scale. Porosity measurements were performed using two image segmentation methods, namely automatic and manual. The porosity results using the manual segmentation method yielded porosity values for the four Berea sandstone cores of 20.03%, 20.36%, 20.50%, and 20.04%, respectively, which are close to the porosity measurement values obtained from laboratory tests using a porosimeter. The average accuracy of porosity values using the automatic segmentation method compared to laboratory test data was 45.10%, while using the manual segmentation method reached 98.86%. The high accuracy obtained using the manual method indicates that this method is more valid as it falls within the acceptable accuracy range according to SNI ISO 17025:2017 standards.
