Abstract

The manufacturing industry faces great challenges in improving the efficiency and quality of products, one of which is on the metal Cutting process using CNC Plasma Cutting machines. In the Laboratory of Industrial Engineering of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, one of the main problems encountered was the inaccuracy of the cut results against the initial design, which impacted the interruption of the assembly process, the decrease of product aesthetics, as well as causing inefficiencies in the implementation of practical time. This study aims to determine the optimal Cutting parameters to improve the dimensional accuracy of the Cutting results of stainless steel plate 430. The method used is the Taguchi Design of Experiment (DOE) with L9 orthogonal matrix, which involves four main factors, namely Cutting speed, nozzle diameter, gas pressure, power current, and electric current at three Levels, respectively. The Taguchi method was chosen due to its ability in identifying the significant influence of various process parameters with a lesser number of experiments, thus being efficient in the use of time and resources without reducing the validity of the results. Signal to Noise Ratio (S/N) and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) analyzes were used to assess the contribution of each factor and determine the optimal combination. The results showed that the best combination of parameters was a Cutting speed of 1200 mm/min, a nozzle diameter of 1.1 mm, a gas pressure of 90 psi, and an electrical current strength of 25 A, with the largest contribution coming from the Cutting speed (97.92%). The parameters of cutting speed, nozzle diameter, and electric current have a significant influence on the accuracy of the cutting results, while gas pressure does not have a significant influence. Confirmation experiments proved this combination to be effective in improving the precision of the Cutting results validly, so this study provides practical recommendations for the improvement of Cutting quality in both industrial and practical activities.
