Abstract
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) plays a vital role in improving productivity and preventing workplace accidents. However, the number of work-related accidents in Indonesia remains high each year, one of the causes being exposure to hazardous gases such as carbon monoxide (CO). CO gas is particularly dangerous because it is colorless and odorless, making it difficult to detect and potentially causing serious health issues or even death without warning. In metal casting industries such as PT. XYZ in Klaten, CO gas can be produced during the metal smelting process. Unfortunately, the company currently lacks both a CO gas monitoring device and a well-established OHS division. This study aims to design a CO gas detection system that can be installed on workers' safety helmets. The system integrates an MQ-7 sensor to detect CO gas, an ESP32 microcontroller as the control center, a buzzer for audio alerts, an LCD to display gas concentration data, and the Blynk application to monitor data in real time. The research method used is prototyping, consisting of seven stages like needs analysis, design, prototype evaluation, Coding, testing, system evaluation, and implementation. Test results showed that the system could detect CO gas with an accuracy rate of 61,93% compared to a standard Air Quality Analyzer. The system successfully provided alerts through the buzzer, LCD, and Blynk notifications when CO levels exceeded the threshold of 25 ppm. Although the system functioned effectively, further development is needed to enhance its durability in extreme working environments. Overall, this system is expected to improve worker safety and support the implementation of OHS regulations in the company.
