Abstract
This study examines the implementation of the sakinah family concept for female single parents in Sukahening Village, Sukahening District, Tasikmalaya Regency, West Java. The phenomenon of single parenthood, particularly among women, has become a significant concern given the high divorce rates in Indonesia, including West Java, which often impose dual roles and social stigma. This condition raises a fundamental question: can families led by single mothers still achieve tranquility, love, and compassion (sakinah) amidst various multidimensional challenges? To answer this question, this research employs a qualitative research method, specifically a descriptive-analytic field study. The sociological approach refers to M. Atho' Mudzhar's framework of Islamic legal sociology. This framework views Islam as both a cultural phenomenon (ideal teachings) and a social phenomenon (lived practice), which interact within empirical reality. Primary data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews with four female single-parent informants in Sukahening Village, complemented by secondary data from various literature. Data analysis was conducted inductively, encompassing three stages: (1) data reduction to filter important points, (2) data presentation to link field findings with relevant theories, and (3) conclusion drawing through deep reflection and re-analysis of field notes. The research findings indicate that female single parents in Sukahening Village face significant obstacles, including economic aspects (sole breadwinner burden), mental and social aspects (grief, trauma, negative stigma), child-rearing (time constraints), and child education (financial impact). Nevertheless, they demonstrate extraordinary resilience through adaptive strategies, such as self-empowerment through productive work, activation of social capital from kinship and community networks, and strengthening spiritual resilience. The concept of sakinah they embody is practical and adaptive, emphasizing inner tranquility and emotional harmony pursued through mother-child relationships, transcending traditional family structures. From the perspective of Islamic legal sociology, their efforts represent a form of practical ijtihad, demonstrating the adaptation of ideal religious values to challenging social realities. However, existing structural constraints indicate that achieving holistic sakinah requires systemic intervention and comprehensive support from society and the government, rather than solely relying on individual efforts.
