Abstract

Along with the development of technology, new criminal acts have emerged with increasingly sophisticated modus operandi. Sextortion is a form of sexual violence that is included in the cyber crime. The crime of sextortion is not an ordinary electronic-based sexual violence crime. The complexity of the crime of sextortion includes elements of sexual violence accompanied by extortion and the anonymity of the perpetrator on social media networks (cyber space). In practice, sextortion is a strange term in society. However, there have been several cases that meet the elements of sextortion that require special attention because of the complicated solution. Therefore, the role of investigators who master relevant knowledge and special means is needed to uncover the crime of sextortion optimally. This study raises the formulation of problems that focus on the investigation process of sextortion crimes, especially at the stage of identifying perpetrators, as well as obstacles in the context of law enforcement of sextortion crimes in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The type of research used by the author is field research with an empirical juridical approach. The data collection technique was conducted by interviews and observations at the Cyber Sub-Directorate of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation of the Yogyakarta Police. The theory used in this study is the theory of law enforcement and investigation. Law enforcement is the realization of ideas such as justice and in this study it is used to see how law enforcement of sextortion crimes through the efforts of investigators in the process of identifying sextortion perpetrators in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The results of the research and analysis conducted by the author show that in resolving the crime of sextortion in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Sub-Directorate V of the Cyber Directorate of Criminal Investigation of the Yogyakarta Police is responsible for the implementation of the investigation of cyber crimes including sextortion. Investigators made several efforts about forensic digital to identify the perpetrators of the crime in the process of investigating the crime of sextortion. Yogyakarta Police investigators also collaborate with related agencies to track perpetrators of sextortion crimes such as Electronic System Operators and Internet Service Providers (ISPs); Ministry of Communication and Digital; Banking Institutions; Polri; and cooperation between Interpol and foreign countries. In addition, at the stage of identifying perpetrators in the process of investigating sextortion crimes at the Yogyakarta Police, there are still several obstacles that affect the law enforcement, including anonymity of perpetrators, limitations on witnesses and evidence, limitations on special means and investigator resources, and limitations on inter-agency cooperation.
