Abstract
This study explores the phenomenon of ikhtilat that leads to the degradation of hadith transmitters and analyzes the scholarly contribution of al-Ightibat, authored by Burhan al-Din al-Halabi. The research is motivated by the critical importance of preserving the authenticity of hadith, in which transmitters—serving as conduits of hadith transmission—are vulnerable to deteriorating conditions such as aging, illness, or misfortune that may affect the reliability of their narrations. This study aims to: (1) analyze al-Halabi’s methodology in compiling the list of hadith transmitters who experienced ikhtilat, (2) identify the causative factors of ikhtilat and its impact on the transmission of hadith, and (3) classify the thiqqah (trustworthy) and ghayru siqqah (untrustworthy) narrators documented in the book. This research employs a qualitative method using a library research approach. The primary data source is the al-Ightibat itself, while secondary data are derived from classical to contemporary rijal al-hadith literature. The findings show that al-Halabi compiled his work in a systematic (alphabetical) and concise manner, listing 123 narrators, both thiqqah and ghayru siqqah. The dominant factors causing ikhtilat include advanced age and personal misfortunes. Although al-Halabi’s work is a key reference in isnad criticism, he primarily compiled earlier scholars’ evaluations rather than offering independent analysis. This study highlights that narrator assessment is not static but dynamic and contextual, adapting to the narrators’ changing conditions. It also offers a methodological framework for evaluating narrations from mukhtalit transmitters.
