Abstract

This research examines the relevance of the concept of ahliyyah (competence) in the hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah about trustworthiness to the phenomenon of identity politics in Indonesia. The increasing political phenomenon that utilizes elements of religion, ethnicity, and SARA (Ethnicity, Religion, Race, and Intergroup) issues after the 2014 general election series, the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial contest, and the 2019–2024 general election is considered a significant threat to national integration and the fundamental principles of Pancasila. By applying a qualitative research methodology and using a literature study approach, this study conducts an in-depth analysis of the hadith on the theme of amanah contained in the compilation of Sahih Bukhari number 6496, reviewed using a hermeneutic perspective developed by the thinker Khaled Abou El-Fadl. The analysis techniques include takhrij (hadith source verification), i'tibar sanad (chain of narration validation), and interpretation of the original, historical, significant, and implicative meanings of the hadith. The results show that Abu Hurairah's hadith emphasizes that entrusting affairs to those who are not qualified (ghairu ahlihi) constitutes a betrayal of trust that could potentially trigger social destruction. Through the hermeneutical approach, it is revealed that the original meaning of the hadith emphasizes leadership based on competence and integrity, while its historical context relates to the governance of Medinan society that prioritized meritocracy. In contemporary Indonesian context, the concept of ahliyyah offers objective criteria (competence, justice, and morality) for evaluating leaders, thus serving as an antithesis to exclusive and primordial identity politics. This research concludes that the development of ahliyyah discourse can encourage a shift from identity politics toward inclusive national politics based on Pancasila and universal values, while enriching the discourse of substantive democracy in Indonesia.
