Abstract

The escalating ecological crisis today is inseparable from human behaviour that exploits the environment irresponsibly. One of its root causes lies in the prevailing worldview and actions toward nature, which are not grounded in Islamic values but are instead driven by the pursuit of unlimited economic growth. Through the framework of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh al-bi’ah), Ali Yafie offers an alternative paradigm for responding to this crisis. This study is guided by two research questions: (1) How can Ali Yafie’s conception of environmental fiqh be described as the contextual foundation of his thought? (2) How can the concept of khalifah within Ali Yafie’s environmental fiqh be analysed from philosophical perspectives of worldview and ethics? Accordingly, the objectives of this research are: first, to elucidate Ali Yafie’s thought on environmental fiqh (fiqh al-bi’ah); and second, to deepen the understanding of the khalifah concept—initially outlined in his environmental fiqh—through a philosophical lens focusing on its underlying worldview and principles of environmental preservation. Employing a philosophical approach, this study concentrates on the dimensions of worldview and ethics within Ali Yafie’s environmental fiqh. Primary data are drawn from Ali Yafie’s seminal works, notably Merintis Fiqh Lingkungan Hidup and Menggagas Fiqih Sosial, supplemented by relevant secondary literature. Thematic analysis is used to identify recurring patterns, relationships, and potential tensions surrounding the concept of khalifah in the context of environmental jurisprudence. The findings reveal two principal insights. First, Ali Yafie’s environmental fiqh represents a reconstruction of Islamic jurisprudence—traditionally centred on ritual dimensions—by reorienting it toward ecological concerns. Second, the concept of khalifah in this framework emphasises two main aspects: (1) environmental fiqh as a worldview that activates human responsibility toward nature; and (2) environmental fiqh as a foundational ethical principle for environmental conservation, thereby realising the role of khalifah as an ecologically accountable vicegerent
