Abstract

DIY faces waste challenges, with a daily waste volume of 1,231.55 tons, of which only 756 tons can be effectively managed. The Jogja Maggot Farm (KMJ) in Kricak, Tegalrejo, Yogyakarta, emerged as an alternative solution for organic waste management. This program empowers communities through maggot farming, which offers both environmental and economic benefits. This is evidenced by three maggot farming groups that are now self-sufficient. The research method used is qualitative with a case study approach. Data collection techniques include interviews, observations, and documentation. The research findings indicate that the Plasma Program is implemented through seven empowerment stages: (1) Preparation stage, where KMJ collaborates with PT. Waste4Change and PT. PII. Field preparation includes feasibility study of the three communities, establishing with community leaders and key figures, followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). (2) KMJ and Waste4Change assessed the potential, issues, and resources available to the communities. (3) The alternative program planning stage involved KMJ organizing a discussion forum with the core Plasma management team to present the Plasma program as an alternative solution to waste management issues in the communities. (4) KMJ formulated an action plan in the proposal submitted to PT. PII. (5) The implementation phase involves KMJ conducting socialization activities with the three communities. Then, KMJ and Watste4Change provide mentoring and training on maggot farming. KMJ and PII install maggot cages and facilities. The community then practices maggot farming and submits the results to KMJ. (6) KMJ and community members conduct a joint evaluation regarding the challenges faced. (7) Plasma becomes self-reliant after six months of mentoring and is terminated if Plasma does not produce for three months. This study is expected to provide insights for local governments and communities in developing more effective and sustainable waste management strategies.
