Abstract

Former sex workers in Dukuh Petamanan, Banyuputih Village, face significant challenges after the transformation of the local prostitution area into an Islamic Center. Although the localization was widely recognized as a center of commercial sex work and a source of social stigma, some former sex workers did not perceive their lives there as problematic. In fact, they felt comfortable with the situation, despite having limited access to social services. This study focuses on the reintegration process of former sex workers after the transformation of the locality. The research was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach, with snowball sampling techniques to access hard-to-reach populations, as well as through observation and documentation in Dukuh Petamanan. The results reveal that the reintegration process post-transformation involves four main aspects: social, economic, psychological, and spiritual. Effective solutions were found through community-based empowerment initiatives that promote social inclusion, such as involvement in social activities, emotional support, and sustainable empowerment. Programs that were too brief, overly formal, and did not address individual needs were shown to be ineffective. This transformation forces former sex workers to reintegrate and adapt to new social norms. More inclusive and sustainable initiatives have proven to foster a more stable social life, even though initially, they did not view the locality as a major issue for them. This study demonstrates that the social reintegration of former sex workers requires a holistic approach that takes into account individual perspectives on the locality and focuses on more humane, context-based social needs.
