Abstract

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) are essential 21st-century competencies that need to be instilled from an early age. However, field realities show that teachers' understanding of the HOTS concept remains low, conventional teaching methods still dominate, and there is a lack of contextual and age-appropriate interactive media for early childhood education. This gap highlights the need for innovative learning media that are not only engaging but also capable of developing higherorder thinking skills in young children. This study aims to develop a HOTS-based interactive book as a learning medium to help children aged 5–6 years at RA Al- Hikmah, Beringin District, North Sumatra, analyze, evaluate, and create in relation to Indonesian culture. The research method used is Research and Development (R&D) with a 4D development model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). Data were collected through observations, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation, and validated by subject matter experts, media experts, and educational practitioners. Validation results showed an average score of 3.5, categorized as "Excellent". A limited trial involving 10 children yielded an average HOTS aspect score of 3.3, also in the "Excellent" category. Thus, the HOTS-based interactive book is considered feasible and effective for enhancing higher-order thinking skills in children while introducing local culture in an enjoyable and meaningful way.
