Abstract

Mental health has become an increasingly critical issue amid rising life pressures, stress, and psychological disorders faced by modern society. Many individuals experience anxiety, depression, and emotional imbalance, yet not all receive appropriate treatment, especially in a spiritual context. On the other hand, conventional medical approaches are sometimes insufficient to address problems rooted in psycho-spiritual dimensions. This study explores ruqyah therapy as an alternative treatment for mental health disorders at the Baitur Ruqyah wal Hijamah (BRH) Center in Kotagede. Employing a qualitative method with a case study approach, this research is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) theory, which emphasizes the interrelation between thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Ruqyah therapy is viewed not only as a means to provide emotional relief but also as a way to reshape negative thought patterns and behaviors through the recitation of Qur’anic verses and Islamic supplications (dzikr). Patients choose this therapy because the disorders they experience involve spiritual, physical, and mental aspects. At BRH, ruqyah therapy is conducted by reciting Qur’anic verses and prayers aimed at calming the mind, alleviating symptoms, and strengthening the patient's spiritual resilience. The practitioners apply an interactive approach by monitoring patients’ responses and adapting the therapy accordingly. The post-therapy reflection phase is also an essential component of the healing process. The findings indicate that ruqyah therapy contributes to mental health recovery by enhancing cognitive, emotional, and spiritual balance, improving sleep quality, and fostering readiness to face life’s challenges.
