Abstract

Witr prayer is one of the highly recommended Sunnah acts of worship in Islam. However, in practice, there are differing opinions regarding the number of rak'ahs (units of prayer) that are considered Sunnah. Various hadiths mention different numbers of rak'ahs for Witr prayer, ranging from one, three, five, to eleven. These differences often lead to confusion in the understanding and practice of this act of worship. This study examines the hadiths concerning the number of rak'ahs in Witr prayer using Fazlur Rahman's hermeneutical approach through the double movement method. The research method used is qualitative with a ma‘ānī al-ḥadīth approach, aiming to uncover the deeper meaning of the hadith texts by taking into account the socio-cultural context during the time of revelation and the life of the Prophet. Fazlur Rahman's double movement approach is applied to conduct two movements: first, to trace the historical meaning of the hadith texts; and second, to formulate their moral and contextual significance for the lives of Muslims today. The focus of the study lies in understanding how the meaning of the hadiths was historically perceived, and how their universal values can be made relevant in modern life. The hadiths under study, such as the narration from An-Nasa’i No. 1712, indicate variations in the number of Witr rak'ahs one, three, five, up to seven rak'ahs practiced during the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This research aims to explain how the variations in the number of rak'ahs found in the hadiths do not contradict each other, but rather reflect the flexibility of worship that is relevant to the needs of the Muslim community in different historical contexts. The study reveals that these hadiths actually depict a dynamic interpretation that enriches the understanding of Witr prayer.
