Abstract

Bulug Al-Maram by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani is one of the secondary hadith compilations widely used as a reference by scholars of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh). Many of them have been interested in writing commentaries (sharḥ) on this work due to its distinctive qualities. Some have provided comprehensive commentaries, while others focused only on specific chapters, such as the Jami‘ chapter. One such example is Al-Jami‘ Min Bulug Al-Maram by Abdul Aziz bin Baz, a commentary that covers only the Jami‘ chapter. This work, authored by a contemporary scholar, revisits Bulug al-Maram through his unique scholarly background, applying different methods and approaches compared to earlier commentaries. Based on the statement above, the researcher is interested in conducting a deeper study of the methods and approaches used by Ibn Baz in his syarah book Al-Jami' Min Bulug Al-Maram, and will put forward subjective arguments regarding the advantages, disadvantages, and special features of this book compared to previous syarah books. This research is a study that uses a descriptive qualitative approach based on literature (library research). Data were collected from primary sources, namely the book Al-Jami' Min Bulug Al-Maram and secondary sources such as books, journal articles, and other relevant studies. The findings of this study reveal that Ibn Baz employed several methods of hadith commentary, including the taḥlīlī (analytical), ijmalī (general), muqarin (comparative), and mawḍu‘ī (thematic) methods. Among these, Ibn Baz tended to favor the taḥlīlī method, providing detailed explanations in accordance with his scholarly inclinations. Furthermore, he utilized a variety of approaches, such as linguistic, legal, historical, anthropological, and other relevant approaches. One of the distinguishing features of this work is the use of simple language and a tendency to contextualize the understanding of hadith, which facilitates readers in comprehending its meanings. However, in terms of structural organization, the book also presents certain shortcomings, one of which is the inconsistency in the application of methods and approaches used. It is hoped that this study contributes to the field of Islamic studies, helping readers to choose the most appropriate commentary as a reference for understanding the meanings and rulings contained within hadiths.
