Abstract

Critical thinking and gross motor skills are two essential aspects that need to be optimally developed from an early age as foundational competencies to face 21st-century education challenges. Therefore, innovative and engaging learning media are required to stimulate both aspects in an integrated manner. This study aims to: (1) determine the effect of using the “Aneka Variasi” Playmat game on the critical thinking skills of children aged 5–6 years; (2) determine its effect on gross motor skills; and (3) assess the effectiveness of the media in enhancing both abilities. This research employed a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The study involved 22 children in Group B at BA Aisyiyah Tanjungsari, Manisrenggo District, Klaten Regency. Data collection techniques included observation, documentation, and testing, while data analysis used normality tests, homogeneity tests, independent sample t-tests, and N-Gain score calculations. The results showed that: (1) there was a significant effect on children's critical thinking skills, as evidenced by the t-test with a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05) and an N-Gain score of 70.30% (moderate to high category); (2) there was a significant effect on gross motor skills, with an N-Gain score of 77.80% (moderate to high category); and (3) all aspects of critical thinking and gross motor skills improved after learning with the “Aneka Variasi” Playmat. Therefore, this media is proven to be effective and appropriate as an alternative learning tool in early childhood education to support both cognitive and physical development holistically
