Abstract

This thesis presents a comprehensive analysis of the impact of social media user on digital literacy and book reading behavior among santri (Islamic boarding school students). The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated a significant shift towards digital learning, highlighting adaptation challenges to new information access and processing methods. This research aims to analyze the influence of Instagram, Youtube and TikTok on user preferences, the role of media in information literacy comprehension from book reading behavior, a comparison of the impact of social media on digital literacy, and the maqasid syariah perspective on the impact of social media on student literacy. Through a quantitative questionnaire-based approach involving santri aged 18-25 in 22 Islamic boarding schools in Wonosobo Regency, it was found that interactive design encourages rapid content consumption and instant gratification, which significantly correlates negatively with the duration of traditional book reading. The majority of respondents (87%) use smartphones daily, with approximately 3 hours of usage being the most common, and higher social media screen time correlating with lower deep book reading ability. This analysis reveals that social media design, which prioritizes speed and quantity, inadvertently leads to "surface literacy," an information credibility crisis, and increased plagiarism, directly threatening critical thinking skills and intellectual integrity. From the perspective of maqasid syariah, particularly the principle of Hifz al-Aql (preservation of intellect), this impact is highly detrimental, fostering a culture of uncritical acceptance and intellectual dishonesty. Therefore, this research recommends wise interventions, including the regulation of social media use in educational environments and the development of digital literacy curricula focused on critical thinking and academic integrity, to safeguard intellectual and ethical well-being in the digital age.
