Abstract

This dissertation examines the hybridity and institutional dynamics of Islamic philanthropy through a case study of the Pos Keadilan Peduli Umat (PKPU) Foundation from 2001 to 2023. In the context of social and economic modernization, and the globalization of humanitarian values, zakat institutions in Indonesia have undergone a strategic repositioning, situating themselves at the intersection of Islamic spirituality and the ethos of global humanitarianism. This study employs a qualitative case study approach, using in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and institutional document analysis. Homi K. Bhabha’s theory of hybridity and the ideas of Marie Juul Petersen serve as the primary analytical frameworks. The findings reveal that PKPU underwent an adaptive and strategic institutional spin-off process, resulting in the establishment of derivative entities such as HI (Human Initiative), IZI, and iWakaf. Human Initiative (HI), as the parent institution, is recognized for its ability to operate across religious and national boundaries. These changes are not only structural but also ideological and practical, demonstrating a reconstruction of the identity and function of Islamic philanthropic institutions amidst the pressures of global professionalism and the normative boundaries of sharia. Zakat distribution strategies continue to be exercised with caution, reflecting a dialectic between fiqh conservatism and the demands of transformative humanitarianism. In contrast to Marie Juul Petersen’s approach, which emphasizes value integration within a single institutional entity, this study finds that PKPU’s transformation reflects a more complex dynamic. Limitations in expression within the parent organization spurred the emergence of derivative institutions as avenues for functional expansion and innovation. The spin-off process is not a form of competition, but a collaborative mechanism enabling role distribution, idea incubation, and the strengthening of the Islamic humanitarian mission. This phenomenon illustrates a model of institutional development that is branched, synergistic, and adaptive— highlighting the dialectic between structural conservatism and a spirit of innovation in addressing contemporary humanitarian challenges.
