Abstract

Mental stress is a serious issue faced by inmates during their sentences. Feelings of anxiety, isolation, and loss of hope often arise due to limited environmental conditions and minimal support. This study aims to determine and analyze the role of counselors in reducing this mental stress in the Class IIA Yogyakarta Penitentiary. The approach used was qualitative with descriptive methods. Data were obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation with two counselors, two inmates, and the Head of the Community Guidance Sub-Section. The results revealed that counselors play a crucial role through five main roles: counselor, consultant, agent of change, prevention agent, and manager. These roles are carried out through counseling sessions, personality development, and coordination with various related parties. The results show that the role of counselors has a positive impact on the mental stability of inmates, such as the ability to manage emotions, think more clearly, and openly express feelings. This helps them serve their sentences with greater calm and prepare them for the process of social reintegration into society
