Abstract
Indonesia ranks third in terms of the highest hunger levels in Southeast Asia. Paradoxically, in a nation plagued by hunger, food is most often discarded; Indonesia’s hunger is not due to a shortage of food, but rather to an excess that remains unmanaged. This study aims to explore surplus food redistribution practices implemented by BAZNAS, a philanthropic institution that does not function as a food bank. It further discusses the indicators of environmentally oriented philanthropic practices (eco-philanthropy) based on Yusuf al-Qaradawi’s concept of ḥifẓ al-bī’ah. A qualitative method with a case study approach was employed, with data collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and conceptual review. The findings reveal that surplus food redistribution can serve as a win–win solution in addressing the environmental crisis caused by food waste amidst high hunger levels in Indonesia. The study concludes that preventing food waste through surplus food redistribution aligns with the principle of ḥifẓ al-bī’ah within the maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah framework, while simultaneously supporting the five essential objectives of Islamic law: preserving environmental sustainability for the continuity of worship (ḥifẓ al-dīn), protecting health and life (ḥifẓ al-nafs), enhancing intellectual development through nutritional fulfillment (ḥifẓ al-‘aql), ensuring a habitable earth for future generations (ḥifẓ al-nasl), and preventing the waste of natural resources (ḥifẓ al-māl). Interestingly, this social–collaborative practice can be integrated into national regulatory and incentive systems.
