Abstract

This research examines the process of community empowerment through ecoliteracy practices at the Rumah Baca Komunitas (RBK) in Kanoman Hamlet, Yogyakarta. The study is motivated by the low level of public awareness regard- ing ecological issues, a key problem, and the inability of conventional literacy ef- forts to fully drive behavioral change. RBK serves as an alternative space that ef- fectively integrates literacy with environmental awareness through various com- munity-based programs. The main objective of this study is to analyze how the community empow- erment process is implemented through ecoliteracy practices and to identify spe- cific ecoliteracy practices applied by RBK to empower the community. This re- search uses a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through in- depth interviews, direct observation, and documentation. The findings show that the community empowerment process at RBK is conducted systematically through three stages: awareness-raising, capacity- building, and empowerment. Indications of the program's success are seen in the increased ecological awareness and self-reliance of the community, which is man- ifested through active participation in activities such as the Ecoliteracy Garden and Environmental Action Workshops. Furthermore, the formation of independent initiatives among activists and community members is also clear evidence that RBK's ecoliteracy efforts can produce transformative and sustainable behavioral change.
