Abstract

The background of this study is based on the phenomenon of the Barodak tradition within the wedding ceremony of the Sumbawa ethnic community, which employs various symbols functioning as a medium of intergenerational communication. In the Barodak tradition, symbols such as coconuts, white cloth, candles, and other ceremonial items embody social, religious, and moral meanings passed down through symbolic interaction between participants and the wider community. However, in the era of globalization, the continuity of Barodak faces challenges due to the declining understanding of symbolic meanings among the younger generation, which has led to reduced participation and weakened transmission of cultural values. This research applies Symbolic Interactionism as the grand theory and Persuasive Communication as the supporting theory to identify the symbols within Barodak, explore their meanings, and analyze how the Sumbawa people interpret these symbols based on their subjective experiences. The study aims to examine the symbolic meanings of Barodak and understand the cultural communication processes embedded within it. A qualitative method with a phenomenological approach was employed, involving in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, ceremony participants, and youth representatives, along with participatory observation and visual documentation. The findings reveal that each symbol in Barodak is collectively interpreted, reinforcing social cohesion and cultural identity. Nevertheless, field observations indicate shifts in form and simplification of the ceremony. In conclusion, Barodak retains its vital role as a medium of cultural communication but requires adaptive preservation strategies, including innovative presentation and the use of digital media to engage younger generations.
