Abstract

This study explores task aversiveness among first-year foreign students studying in Yogyakarta. The study focuses on exploring information about the first-year study process, the difficulties encountered, the emotional dynamics experienced, and how the informants responded to the task aversiveness they experienced. This study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The data were collected by doing in-depth interview on two informants and their significant others, who were chosen purposively. Data analysis was conducted by a thematic process that included data organization, memo writing, coding, interpretation, and visualization. The results of the study indicate that task aversiveness among international students is a dynamic condition that is influenced by language and cultural background, the education system, and individual characteristics. The informants showed different patterns in aspects of task aversiveness, such as boredom, frustration, and resentment. Furthermore, the informants conditions indicated that the numerous and difficult tasks not only cause task aversiveness but also lead to physical effects and emotional changes experienced by the informants. This study provides insights into the task aversiveness experienced by foreign students and suggests how to reduce the task aversiveness, as well as offering recommendations for educational institutions to provide more adaptive support for foreign students at the beginning of their academic year.
